In 1997 the San Antonio Independent School District began implementing AVID in just a few schools. Its success in Texas over the past decade has resulted in the implementation of AVID in more than 300 schools in 2006-2007, spanning 59 school districts, which makes Texas’ statewide implementation of AVID the second largest in the nation.
Points of Program Growth in Texas from 2001-2002 to 2006-2007:
- AVID enrollment increased from nearly 4,500 students to more than 22,400 students
- AVID implementation increased from 73 sites to just over 300 sites
Annual data collection over the past several years has revealed the following information about AVID students and their performance:
- Primarily Hispanic and African American (80% to 85%)
- Primarily economically disadvantaged (65% to 70%)
- AVID middle school students:
- More than 80% enroll in advanced GT or Pre-AP courses
- Nearly 50% of AVID 8th graders enroll in HS Integrated Physics/Chemistry
- One-third to one-half of AVID 8th graders enroll in HS English
- Between 23% and 26% of AVID 8th graders enroll in HS foreign language courses
- More than one-third of AVID 8th graders enroll in and complete Algebra or Geometry
- The portion of AVID 8th graders who have taken college preparatory tests (PSAT, PLAN, or EXPLORE) has increased from 23% in 2001-2002 to 67% in 2005-2006
- AVID high school students:
- 70% to 90% of 9th and 10th graders enroll in Pre-AP courses
- 30% to 40% of 11th and 12th graders take and complete an AP English course
- 70% to 80% of seniors complete at least one AP course before graduating
